How to Spot Good Quality Imitation Jewellery
Not all imitation jewellery is made equal. Here's what actually separates a piece that lasts from one that turns green or chips within weeks.
1. Check the Plating
Good imitation jewellery uses gold, rhodium, or micro-gold plating over a base metal like brass or copper alloy. Thicker, well-adhered plating resists fading longer. Cheaper pieces use a thin wash that rubs off with normal wear.
2. Anti-Tarnish Coating
Look for jewellery described as "anti-tarnish" — this means a protective lacquer layer is applied over the plating, slowing down the natural darkening that happens from moisture, sweat, and air exposure.
3. Stone Setting
Run a finger gently over the stones. Well-set stones (glued and clawed properly) won't wobble or feel loose. Loose stone setting is one of the most common quality issues in cheaper imitation pieces.
4. Weight and Finish
Good quality pieces feel slightly substantial, not paper-light, and the back/underside of the jewellery should be finished neatly, not rough or unpolished.
5. Care Extends Life — Regardless of Quality
- Store pieces separately in a cloth pouch, not tangled together.
- Avoid direct perfume/deodorant contact on the jewellery.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear before storing.
